Parking

2800 Whiskey Island Dr, Cleveland, OH 44113

Free lot at the end of Whiskey Island Drive. Open before sunrise. Restrooms at the marina building (may be locked pre-dawn).

Circuit order at dawn

Start in the woods, end on the water. Migrants are most active in the first 90 minutes after sunrise.

  1. 1
Park at the Whiskey Island lot
2800 Whiskey Island Dr. Free, open by 6am. Pull in, kill the engine, listen for a minute before getting out — dawn chorus starts before you can see anything.
  2. 2
    Woodlot first — south-central
Walk the path that loops through the cottonwood / wild cherry / mulberry stand south of the lot. This is where overnight migrants drop in at dawn. Warblers, vireos, thrushes — work it slowly, 30–45 minutes.
  3. 3
    River mouth — east edge
Cut east toward the Cuyahoga river mouth. Flyover passerines that did not commit to the woodlot often drop here. Also gulls and the occasional tern working the channel.
  4. 4
    Breakwater walk — north edge
Head out the breakwater path along the lake. This is the lake-watch leg: loons, scoters, mergansers, sometimes a jaeger in fall. Wind in your face is good — birds fly into it close to shore.
  5. 5
Back to the lot via the inner loop
Loop back south through the open grass and edge habitat. Sparrows, blackbirds, raptors moving overhead by mid-morning. Total circuit: 2–3 hours at birding pace.

The spots, in detail

The woodlot — south-central
Cottonwood, wild cherry, mulberry. Edge habitat where overnight migrants drop in. The single best stop for warblers in May.
The breakwater walk — north edge
Paved path out along the rocks. Open lake to the north. Bring a scope if you have one; otherwise binoculars are fine for close-shore flyby ducks.
River mouth — east edge
Where the Cuyahoga meets the lake. Flyover passerines that pass over the woodlot often drop here on a second pass. Gulls and terns work the channel year-round.
Wendy Park Bridge — alternate access
Pedestrian / bike bridge over the rail yard from Whiskey Island Drive to the Flats. Open 6am to 11pm. Useful if the main lot is full or you want a longer walk in.
